This afternoon Mayor Annise D. Parker announced August 28, 2012 as Downtown Street Team Day!
In August 1992, The Houston Downtown Management District implemented the Downtown Street Team Program. For the last 20 years, the team wearing yellow and teal has supported the Downtown District’s key goal to make downtown feel comfortable and safe.
On a daily basis, the Downtown Street Teams are responsible for picking up trash, litter, reporting needed repairs and removing graffiti. The Downtown Street Teams are also committed to maintaining the appearance of public pedestrian areas including Main Street Square and Market Square Park.
Working 9 hour shifts, rotated 7 days per week, 365 days per year, this often thankless job is critical to the feeling Houstonians and visitors have when they work, play and visit downtown Houston.
20 YEARS OF CLEAN-UP LOOKS LIKE...
16,842,540 gallons of trash removed by 510,380 Street Team blue bags
More than 24,000 sites where graffiti has been removed
Over 19,000 block faces have been pressure washed
100.43 net tons of recyclable materials in the last 4 years
Today, we want everyone in downtown to stop and thank a Downtown Street Team Member for maintaining a level of cleanliness and atmosphere we have come to expect. Thank you!
