Museum convention coming to Houston

Those who work and live in downtown Houston might want to keep an eye peeled for an interesting – and interested – group of visitors coming to our fair city in the coming days.

The members of the American Association of Museums – some 4,500 strong – will begin gathering at the George R. Brown Convention Center this weekend for the group’s annual meeting and expo. Officially, the event begins Sunday and runs through May 25. Though it’s a private show, downtowners will certainly see them walking around the central business district.

This is a prestigious affair for Houston to host and an opportunity for our community to put our best foot forward in front of an eagle-eyed group that will likely notice and appreciate the efforts. AAM is the largest museum association in the world with 21,000 members, including 3,000 museums, zoos, aquariums and public gardens. Mayor Annise Parker has proclaimed May 22-25 as American Association of Museums Days in Houston.

So, if you see our visitors – clearly ID’d with the telltale lanyards around their necks and carrying assorted totes – please greet them with a hearty Houston hello.
