Theater District Open House!

Well it's that time again! No, not "Nutcracker" (yet!). It's the 17th annual Theater District Open House! Its the big event where we invite you to come to our theaters for FREE and get a behind-the-scenes look at how we do things around here...and by pure coincidence also try to sell you discount season tickets, but totally by coincidence...maybe. Anyway, its a big, crazy, fun event for the whole family - even your second cousin who you might not like so much: you can bring him too.

All your favorite arts groups will be here representin'. (Yes I just ended a word with an apostrophe. Go with it, people.) At the Wortham we have Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Society for the Performing Arts, and Da Camera. Not to mention some of our other smaller groups like Houston Metropolitan Dance, the Indo-American Association and Mercury Baroque (I hear rumors a harpsichord may make an appearance! Have you ever seen one of those things? Seriously, its like a piano...but totally different.)

At Jones Hall you'll be able to visit the Houston Symphony, and a little more Society for the Performing Arts.

There's a lot going on over at our sister theaters The Hobby Center and The Alley Theatre too! And to make things easy for you Capital One is providing trolleys to take everyone to and from each theater! (not to be confused with trolls - which my spell check thought I was trying to spell - because that would be really terrifying for the children).

Here's a list of things you can do at our Open Houses:

  • Take pictures with ballerinas, singers & musicians
  • Have a backstage tour
  • Buy discount season tickets
  • Get free stuff
  • See me and compliment me on my mad blogging skillz
  • Hear some opera
  • Play with musical instruments in our orchestral "petting zoo"
  • Buy discount season tickets
  • Hear some jazz
  • Ride a trolley
  • Get out of the heat for an hour
  • Stand on our stages and see the theater from a whole new POV
  • See how wigs are made (yeah, really)
  • See ballerinas perform
  • Get an up close look at intricate theatrical costumes (my personal fave)
  • And did I mention you can purchase discounted season tickets?

So there you have it, folks. We hope to see you this Sunday, August 29th at noon sharp! Not any earlier because then you'll be like one of those people that comes too early for yard sales and we'll just be irritated. Ok, not really, you can come early to park (in our underground Theater District parking garage!) of course, but keep your hands off the merchandise till we say go!
