Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Majestic Metro Downtown

Create new memories this Valentine’s Day at the historic Majestic Metro with a special screening of the classic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The Houston Downtown Management District (Downtown District) has partnered with the Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow to create an evening to remember in one of downtown’s treasured spaces.

Originally opened as the Ritz Theatre in 1926 as a silent movie house, this opulent and ornate theatre later became the Majestic Metro in 1972. Majestic Metro is the only theatre built before 1930 that is not only still standing, but has seen new life and restoration. After closing its doors in 1984, the theatre underwent an extensive renovation and reopened in 1990 as a venue for special events, including weddings, parties and galas. The Majestic features a large dance floor, banquet-style seating and a state-of-the-art sound and light system.

“The Majestic is one of Houston’s most unique and historical gems and we’re thrilled to make it accessible to the public again with the Valentine’s Day movie screening,” Angie Bertinot, director of marketing and communications for the Downtown District, said. “With a show time of 8:30 p.m., spend the entire evening downtown by taking advantage of dinner specials at local eateries before heading over to the Majestic.”

About Downtown District

The Houston Downtown Management District was formed in 1995 for the purpose of revitalizing the urban core of the country’s fourth largest city. Over the past decade, the Downtown District has used a combination of public funds and private resources to catalyze area improvements focusing on the city blocks bordered by Interstate 10, Highway 59, and Interstate 45. Since the Downtown District began operating in 1996, Downtown Houston has seen more than $4 billion of construction completed in over 110 public and private projects, the creation of 3.2 million square feet of new Class A office space, $500 million of infrastructure improvements, 3,000 new hotel rooms spanning 11 different projects, and a 250% increase in the population of permanent residents. For more information please call 713-650-3022 or visit Downtown District on the web at www.downtowndistrict.org or www.facebook.com/visitdowntownhouston.

About Market Square Park

Market Square Park is at long last being reclaimed as the bustling center of downtown Houston’s Historic District. The new park is a true neighborhood space, anchored by a central lawn where more than one City Hall once stood. A crescent-shaped dog run on the park’s west side gives the canine contingent an attractive and active place to let loose. A beautifully lit fence and walkway arc through the park and provide insight to the history of the area. And if you’re hungry, check out Houston classic Niko Niko’s, where you’ll find delightfully shady, outdoor seating, a plaza for performances and classic Greek and American favorites. Take a quiet moment in Lauren’s Garden, a memorial that honors Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas – a passenger on United Flight 93. With its flowing water, beautiful sculpture, seasonal flowers and leafy trees, the garden memorializes all lost on September 11. Visitors can also come to the park for a full lineup of entertainment options, including music, movies, dog training and more. For musical delights, come out and hear local bands as part of the Heritage Texas Properties presents The Houston Sound concert series at Market Square Park on select Friday evenings in the Spring and Fall. Market Square Park has received a 2011 Good Brick Award for its contribution to the preservation, restoration, and enhancement of Houston's architectural and cultural heritage.

Market Square Park is operated in partnership by the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department and the Houston Downtown Management District.
