Jazz Saxophonist and Blue Note Recording Artist Ravi Coltrane Returns to Da Camera Series Jan. 27

The Da Camera Jazz series continues with the return of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, in performance with his quartet, Friday, January 27, 2012, 8:00 PM at the Cullen Theater, Wortham Theater Center. The Da Camera jazz series is sponsored by Whole Foods Market.

The son of legendary saxophonist John Coltrane and pianist Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane is an acclaimed saxophonist, composer, bandleader and producer. His CD In Flux was nominated for a Grammy Award. “Somehow there is no disputing heredity,” noted jazzpolice.com, “yet there also is no doubt that this Coltrane has taken his own Giant Steps. Genius here extends across generations, the son’s path informed, not confined, by the name Coltrane.”  Since his first appearance on the Da Camera series in 2008, Ravi Coltrane has released the acclaimed Blending Times and signed with Blue Note Records. His first Blue Note recording is scheduled for release in 2012. 

At 46, Ravi Coltrane is in the prime of his career. He tells Rick Mitchell in Da Camera’s program notes about his goals as a musician:

“As you get older, you realize it’s about saying something, finding meaning in your life, and how it relates to your art. To ask yourself, ‘What am I really trying to say here? Is it to play higher and faster than the next guy, or to play what’s inside of you, to say something to your children, or to your parents, viewing you from another plane?

“My goal is to be as personal as I can be as a musician.”         

Da Camera’s Jazz Series continues with Dee Dee Bridgewater on March 17, and comes to a close on April 13 with Tia Fuller Quartet.
