Put on your boogie shoes and ring in 2013 at New Year’s Eve Houston with Grammy® Award winner KC and the Sunshine Band. Celebrating his 40th anniversary, the “king of disco groove” will bring his infectious party music to the city’s annual fun-filled, FREE and family-friendly night for some booty shakin’ and gettin’ down in Discovery Green’s “disco lawn.”
“We are so excited to create such a fantastic, energized and free event for families and music fans,” said Mayor Annise Parker. “This won’t be your typical Auld Lang Syne!”
The event will take place on December 31 from 7:00 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. at Discovery Green. Come and enjoy numerous attractions and activities including the Kids Soul Train and Family Disco where kids and adults will be dazzled with exhilarating rides, towering stilt walkers, sky reaching rock climbing adventures, and glowing games such as Bungee Trampolines, Tub of Fun, and Quad Jumpers.
Catch the GlowParade by Art Cars of Houston, a convoy of art on wheels, brilliantly lit and blowing fire at 8:00 p.m. This route circles Discovery Green so that all patrons can experience the vehicular artistry.
Can’t quite make it to midnight? New Year’s will arrive early for families with small children at 9:00 PM with a Kids Confetti Countdown complete with streamers, glitter and noisemakers to make their New Year special. A second celebration arrives at the stroke of midnight with a dazzling fireworks display presented by Houston First from atop the George R. Brown Convention Center coupled with video and lighting projections on the building façade.
Throughout the night, dance to the sounds of Houston’s finest DJs - DJ Gonz and Elroy Boogie from the Kracker Nuttz and DJ Deuce. Each will spin from atop lighted towers on the disco lawn, battling beats to keep the party hopping. Glide your way from the disco lawn to Club NYE Houston, illuminated with a lighted dance floor, a swanky lounge and funky electric go-go and hip-hop dancers. Commemorate the night at the free photo booth and see yourself projected atop the hill for all guests to see.
Sip some bubbly and toast the end of the year in the Bubble Garden with great views of the main stage, plenty of room for dancing, and a lounge area where you can rest your boogie shoes. A Silent Disco will offer an opportunity to dance to three diverse genres of music under the lights of Maconda’s Grove.
Chill out on the ICE at Discovery Green. Be enthralled by professional skater and Champions of Ice performer, Dan Hollander accompanied by local skaters Sasha and Roman Zaretsky, sibling pair skaters, who competed at the Olympics and World Championships along with Olympic hopefuls Emily Chan and Nina Jiang. Public skating will be available between performance times.
New Year’s Eve Houston will feature three diverse food courts offering delicious, cultural and festive cuisines to ring in the New Year. Enjoy a Prosperity Plate complete with traditional good luck food to bring happiness and success in 2013. Beverage booths will be accessible throughout the site serving winter specialties such as hot cocoa, coffees, and cider, as well as beer, wine and champagne. Cheers!
