Dine Downtown: Bovine & Barley

Stroll down Main Street on any given night and you’ll likely find yourself drawn into this funky industrial spot thanks to brightly lit, wall-sized letters spelling out “HTX”. Located at 416 Main, Bovine & Barley is a modern gastropub that focuses on, you guessed it, meat and beer. Wander through the large double doors and enter the welcoming environment accented by exposed bricks, wood details and a bold U-shaped bar situated in the center of the room.

Established in 2015 by restaurateurs Michael Collins and Jason Lowery, Bovine & Barley offers a casual space for patrons to kick back and enjoy a cold one...or a few cold ones. With beer as the main focus, the bar boasts over 40 brews on tap – including a mix of local options. For those not into hops, the eatery also offers a robust cocktail menu featuring a bevy of drinks such as a Margaritas, French 75’s and our personal favorite, the Pimm’s Cup.

Not only does Bovine & Barley have your drink needs covered, but they’re sure to satisfy your food cravings, too! Choose from delicious small bite options like Texas tots and beef empanadas or go big with full-sized plates like an Italian sausage pizza or bovine burger. If you ask us, the spicy steak tacos never disappoint! Think tender, thin sliced steak meat topped with creamy chipotle, queso fresco and cilantro, all nestled in a flour tortilla...YUM!

In addition to lunch and dinner bites, the spot has also established itself as a brunch and happy hour destination. Order up a few staples like chicken & waffles, French toast and a mimosa carafe - because sharing is caring - and you’ve got yourself one heckuva brunch! Happy Hour takes place daily from 3 PM to 7 PM with each day having its own different theme – we’re talking Taco Tuesdays, Pop Up Eats Wednesdays and Steak-It-Easy Thursdays, to name a few.

In recent months the eatery launched a new venture: a food and drink truck! Kicked off during the COVID-19 quarantine, the truck began as a way to bring highly missed frozen drinks and beer [aka happiness] to patrons while the brick-and-mortar was closed. The mobile bar delivers frozen cocktails, shots and classic craft concoctions straight to your door! Just follow along on social media to see when they’re headed to your neck of the woods, then text them your order.

So, whether you’re looking for a cool place to grab a drink after work or fun spot to catch the game, Bovine & Barley should definitely be on your list of places to go.
