Storm recovery update for May 17-18, 2024: To protect the public, HPD will assign officers to Downtown intersections where storm damage is greatest, an area roughly from Walker St. to Clay St. and Smith St. to Fannin St. Road closures and limited pedestrian access will remain until the properties and area are deemed safe. Tomorrow, our crews will be back at work at 7 a.m. removing the remainder of shattered glass and treating an estimated 200 downed or damaged trees and landscape. Before traveling into Downtown, please confirm the event has not been cancelled and your planned route has been cleared.

Clean

The Operations team works to ensure that Downtown is one of the cleanest and safest neighborhoods in the city.  The District provides the cleaning and care of Downtown’s sidewalks and streetscapes, removing over 1,700 tons of litter per year, and addresses the improvement of Downtown's quality of place by partnering and collaborating with the City of Houston and various entities to create a clean and inviting environment. 

Downtown Cleaning Ambassadors

The Cleaning Ambassadors work daily from 7 AM to 11 PM to achieve the District’s goal of making Downtown Houston a desirable place to live, work and visit. This highly visible team of maintenance professionals provides daily services to maintain the cleanliness of the district. Some of their contributions include: 

  • Keeping over 1,100 block-face sidewalks (285 city blocks) plus planter beds, tree-wells and pavers continually free from rubbish, trash, debris, stains, grime and weeds. 
  • Removing graffiti within four (4) business hours after notification
  • Keeping amenities and outdoor furniture  (trash receptacles, benches, bike racks, drinking fountains etc.) free from soils, stains, trash, graffiti etc. 
  • Tending to landscaping and watering areas that are currently non-irrigated by utilizing the District’s watering trailer.
  • Keeping District provided Port-a-cans clean and free from debris and graffiti.

Elevated Levels of Service 

Throughout the District, there are specific areas that require increased efforts to maintain a pristine level of cleanliness, a high level of operational reliability and a demonstrated commitment to providing programmatic support. The District provides extra care to: 

  • Market Square Park 
  • Main Street Square (Dallas to Walker) 
  • Main Street/ Dallas Street/ Bagby Street 
  • Trebly Park 

Other Responsibilities 

  • Emergency response support 
  • Reporting unsafe conditions or damaged amenities 
  • Power washing 
  • Homeless encampment cleanups 
  • Special event assistance 
  • Lighting checks 

Trash Removal 

  • Service 123 METRO trash receptacles 
  • Service 165 City of Houston trash receptacles 
  • Subscription curbside trash removal program
